YTN Discussion “Security Challenges in a Volatile Region: A View from Israel”
On Wednesday, April 25, GMF Brussels hosted a Young Transatlantic Network (YTN) lunch-discussion entitled “Security Challenges in a Volatile Region: A View from Israel”. The discussion featured Yoel Mester, Political Counsellor for the Mission of Israel to the EU, and GMF’s Ian Lesser.
The speakers addressed a wide range of security challenges facing Israel and neighboring states, as well as Israel’s political relationship with the United States and the European Union on a host of these issues. From the situation in Gaza, to Iran’s continuing nuclear program, to the escalating unrest in Syria, Israel faces a complex web of political and security related threats at home and in its region. Yoel Mester offered the Israeli perspective on each of these issues, referencing both the historical and contemporary strategies of leading Israeli officials. Ian Lesser wove several international perspectives into the conversation, examining the American, European Union, and Turkish strategies in the region.
This session offered the opportunity for young professionals to hear frank insights about on Israel’s complex relationship with neighboring Egypt, its position on Iran’s nuclear capacity, and the possible responses for transatlantic partners moving forward on what are undeniably some of the world’s most challenging political questions.
