Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism in the Mediterranean

In recent years, the Mediterranean has moved from the periphery to the center of global security concerns. Much of this attention is driven by the risk of terrorism affecting regional states, Europe, and the United States. The foreign fighter phenomenon, and spill-overs from protracted conflict and instability around the Mediterranean, are also part of this equation. Experts and stakeholders from Europe, the United States and the Mediterranean region discussed “Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism in the Mediterranean,” at GMF’s latest Mediterranean Strategy Group meeting, held in Naples, May 18-20, 2016. We are pleased to share several reflections on the debate.

The Mediterranean Strategy Group is the principal convening activity of GMF’s Mediterranean Policy Program.  The program, launched in 2007, fosters objective analysis and debate on Mediterranean affairs in transatlantic perspective.  The program is conducted in partnership with the Compagnia di San Paolo, the OCP Policy Center, and Noble Energy.
