Wider Atlantic

GMF and its partners have led path-breaking work on the wider Atlantic with the aim of challenging traditional “mental maps” of transatlantic relations. This effort highlights the North-South and South-South dimensions, alongside U.S.-European relations. Looking at the Atlantic as a whole, our team explores trends and challenges of shared interest, with special attention to the maritime dimension.

What are the implications of changing U.S. and European roles? Is the open system of Atlantic trade, finance, and mobility under threat or will it prove durable? How can countries around the Atlantic basin address the challenge of trans-regional crime and spillovers of political violence? What are the implications of new trends in energy and shipping? What opportunities and challenges are on the horizon for the “blue economy”? Does political unrest in Venezuela and elsewhere point to an Atlantic spring, or something else?

Through convening and analysis around these and other questions, we help shape an agenda for wider Atlantic cooperation. Our network is inclusive and diverse, bringing together leaders from government, business, civil society, and the media.
