NATO and the Mediterranean
GMF focuses on NATO’s Mediterranean strategy through its work on Mediterranean and transatlantic security, and a network of officials and experts on both sides of the Mediterranean and on both sides of the Atlantic. Through policy analysis and strategic convening, GMF addresses NATO’s evolving interests and priorities in the region, and offers policy recommendations on how to adapt NATO’s Mediterranean strategy to current conditions and challenges. In November 2015, GMF organized an “away-day” conference for the NATO Secretary General and Permanent representatives focused on Alliance strategy and partnerships looking south. In addition, GMF regularly hosts high-level NATO officials at its Mediterranean Strategy Group meetings, recent editions of which have addressed security topic of direct relevance to NATO policy. During the July 2016 NATO summit in Warsaw, GMF will organize a ministerial-level plenary session of the expert conference devoted specifically to NATO’s Mediterranean strategy. Our efforts in this area draw on multiple GMF offices and experts, and include an active program of work on Turkey in the NATO context.
