The Mediterranean poses a set of unique challenges to the NATO alliance, with complex threats from both state and non-state actors. The logic of NATO involvement and partnerships across the Mediterranean is evident, but partners for cooperation and conditions for dialogue continuously evolve.

GMF follows developments in security hotspots in the Southern shore of the Mediterranean, particularly the Eastern Mediterranean and the Libyan conflict. We follow the evolving role of regional and global powers in Mediterranean dynamics, including the reverberations of tensions coming from the Gulf, and the growing assertiveness of Russia and China. We observe when the Mediterranean becomes the arena for global powers’ competition, and pay special attention to cases of weaponization of existing conflicts by external actors. We track the security and military engagement of transatlantic allies in the region and advice NATO in its strategy South.
