A Transatlantic Pakistan Policy

Since 2009, GMF has held a series of transatlantic workshops on Pakistan in Paris and Stockholm. These workshops provided a venue for U.S. and European officials and experts to share insights on developments in Pakistan and to enhance cooperation and policy coordination. Participants have included several serving and former ambassadors to Pakistan, other government officials, and policy experts. The workshop also benefits from inputs from leading Pakistani experts and commentators and allows participants to discuss a wide range of issues, including terrorism, nuclear non-proliferation and security, civil-military relations, law and order, the state of the economy, and Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan and India.

In 2014, GMF published a report — A Transatlantic Pakistan Policy — co-authored by GMF fellows Dhruva Jaishankar, Andrew Small, and Daniel Twining, which focused on how the United States and Europe can better coordinate on various policy challenges related to Pakistan, including nuclear proliferation, terrorism and militancy, economic development, and governance.

Topics discussed at past Transatlantic Workshops on Pakistan

  • Militancy, terrorism, and the Pakistani state
  • Nuclear security, and proliferation
  • Democratic governance and civil-military relations
  • Pakistan’s economic and development prospects
  • The roles of Europe and the United States
