Nathaniel Dean
Senior Resident FellowNathaniel Dean is a senior foreign service officer with the US Department of State, currently detailed to the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Until July 2022, he was the director of the Office of Energy Diplomacy for Europe, the Western Hemisphere, and Africa, focusing on promoting US and European energy security. From 2017 to 2020, he was deputy chief of mission of the US Embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus, building new bilateral security ties between the United States and the Republic of Cyprus.
Dean has also served as director of the Office of Nordic and Baltic Affairs, director for Central and Northern European Affairs on the National Security Council Staff, deputy political counselor at the US Embassy in Berlin, and deputy director of the Office of European Union Affairs. He also served in the Netherlands and Mexico.
Dean holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Trinity College and is a fellow of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Seminar XXI program.
