Mission: As Europe and the United States rapidly become more diverse, we must accelerate inclusive leadership in policy and practice. At this critical time, we require leaders who are representative, intercultural in outlook, and inclusive in their approach to policymaking. The Leadership Programs of GMF advance inclusive leadership as a core 21st century leadership competency.

Initiatives: Through GMF’s Paris Inclusive Leadership Hub, we direct four key initiatives: The Transatlantic Inclusion Leaders Network; Inclusive Leadership Summit; Inclusion Strategists Series; and Mission Critical: Inclusive Leadership for the Security Sector. In addition, Inclusive Leadership is a key component of learning for GMF’s Marshall Memorial Fellowship, an area of endeavor for GMF’s Alumni Leadership Action Projects, and a topic of inquiry in GMF’s Marshall Seminars and Transatlantic Leadership Seminars. Through these influential engagements, we accelerate and strengthen the practice of inclusive leadership across sectors and across the Atlantic.

Paris Inclusive Leadership Hub

GMF inaugurated in 2018 a Hub at our Paris office to focus on the study and practice of inclusive leadership. The Hub takes the lead in designing and running our inclusive leadership initiatives, from the Transatlantic Inclusion Leaders Network (TILN), Inclusive Leadership Summit, and Inclusion Strategists Series to thought leadership publications.  The Hub recognizes the energy in France to innovate in the field of inclusive leadership, from creating new technologies to serve an aging population, to forging pathways for a highly diverse young generation to reach and excel in leadership roles.

Transatlantic Inclusion Leaders Network

TILN is a highly innovative transatlantic network of young diverse elected leaders, with select civil society and business leaders who collaborate, peer mentor, and educate each other in the work of advancing inclusive policies and increasing social cohesion. This non-partisan network of GMF alumni now numbers over 150 members and also features dedicated, executive facilitators and partners who provide ongoing coaching. TILN young leaders join GMF’s leadership program alumni network, and form a dynamic cohort introduced to top policymakers; empowered with the skills, confidence, and connections to engage in public service at higher levels of responsibility.

Inclusive Leadership Summit:

In this period of rapid demographic change, inclusive leadership is essential to the cohesion and prosperity of our societies and the transatlantic community. Leaders able to incorporate inclusive practices into their portfolios, teams, and organizations will excel at the forefront of innovation. One key is to create pathways for emerging diverse talent to advance across sectors. Leadership networks provide a strong return on investment toward this goal. The Inclusive Leadership Summit will convene in 2018 on Inclusive Leader Networks, in 2019 on Achieving Political Inclusion, and in 2020 on Tech for Inclusion.

Inclusion Strategists Series: Each quarter, the Paris Hub convenes its Inclusive Strategists’ Series on state-of-the-art approaches to inclusion across sectors. The 2018 series inauguration addressed with the leadership of AARP and top French leaders societal adaptation to aging, Innovating Across Generations: How can we best leverage impact investing toward innovations that make our societies more inclusive regardless of age. We encourage innovators in the field of inclusion to reach out to Kristel Ba, [email protected], if you are planning to be in Paris and would potentially like to play a role in this series.

Mission Critical: Inclusive Leadership for the Security Sector: This program convenes transatlantic partners to explore and advance the practice of inclusive leadership with a focus on security. We commenced in 2013 with Diversity and Inclusion Best Practices for Militaries, a convening for 100 leaders on Capitol Hill and continue to convene each two years alternating between Washington and Berlin, with an additional stop in Brussels. June 2019 is the time frame for the next Berlin convening.

Inclusive Leadership Curricula: The GMF team develops cutting edge curricula for fellows and alumni in the field of inclusive leadership, including as a learning module for the Marshall Memorial Fellowship, and as part of alumni seminars such as the Marshall Seminars and the Transatlantic Leadership Seminars. Each seminar benefits from a unique inclusion lens. Examples include the Washington Marshall Seminar on “Diversity and Inclusion in Foreign Policy,” Berlin Marshall Seminar on “Leading Toward an Inclusive Economy and Workforce,” and the “Transatlantic Leadership Seminar on Power, Faith, and Leadership.”

Focus Area for GMF’s Alumni Leadership Action Projects: GMF leadership program alumni carry out action projects in the area of inclusion, among other key areas of transatlantic concern. These projects have led to extraordinary results such as the founding of NILE (Network Inclusion Leaders) in Germany, and several other dynamic inclusive leader networks across Europe.

Thought Leadership: In addition to authoring articles about inclusive leadership, the GMF team is committed to raising the position of diversity and inclusion (D&I) and inclusive leadership on the transatlantic policy agenda. Through the work of our team, GMF consistently highlights the imperative of inclusive leadership in high level convening and policy settings, such as GMF’s Brussels Forum. Program alumni participate as thought leaders at the Congressional Black Caucus annual legislative conference, and at convening of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, a partner in TILN.

Strategic Outreach and Partnerships: To strengthen pathways for diverse participants into international leadership roles including GMF fellowships, GMF works with partners including minority leadership networks. GMF further plays an active role in the Think Tank Diversity Consortium and the Global Access Pipeline to advance innovation and diversity of thought in the formulation of foreign policy.
