A pillar of the transatlantic partnership, NATO has been a perennial topic and essential component of GMF’s flagship convening effort, the Brussels Forum. From the very first Brussels Forum conversations in 2006, which featured then-NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, to the 10th anniversary featuring Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the evolution of NATO and the Euroatlantic defense and security partnership forged over the better part of the last half-century has been a key driver of dialogue. In 2014, the Forum brought together Lord George Robertson, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, and Anders Fogh Rasmussen for a conversation on the future of NATO, representing 15 years of experience of NATO’s chief official position spanning from 1999-2014. While the focus of conversation, as well as the challenges confronting transatlantic partners, has evolved over the past decade, the preeminence of the Alliance in securing stability in the transatlantic space is clear. From missions in Afghanistan and the Balkans, to the Mediterranean, and an aggressive Russia in Europe’s East, NATO has and will continue to play a key role in GMF’s marquee forum to discuss the most pressing security and defense issues in the transatlantic relationship today.
