About this event

Bulgaria is a potential entry point for Chinese influence in Central and Eastern Europe. Some Bulgarian stakeholders are keen on attracting Chinese investment, but they frequently disregard the associated risks, and Sofia lacks a coherent national policy on the issue. “China’s Quiet Strategy in Bulgaria: Economic Appeal, Political Constraints”, a recent research paper by Asya Metodieva and Dimitar Keranov, explores this situation and the lack of insight into Beijing’s influence in the country.

This event will present the paper’s main findings and examine Bulgaria’s deepening relationship with China. Speakers will discuss the challenges for Bulgaria’s stakeholders in weighing the economic benefits of closer ties against security concerns, the state of the country’s democracy, and its alignment with EU policies.

The panelists will also analyze China’s strategic objectives and investments in Bulgaria from a regional perspective. The discussion will explore pathways for regional cooperation, and emphasize the critical role of partnerships with the EU and the United States for driving Bulgarian advances in areas such as energy, technology, and governance.
