Germany and the World
Germany has moved to center stage of European policymaking with the outbreak of the sovereign debt crisis in 2010. Berlin’s leadership and hesitations have since determined the selection of policy options in the EU. External partners such as the U.S. now tend to identify Berlin as the go-to place in the euro area. Since 2014, Germany has embarked on a review of its foreign policy and is debating its future international role and engagement, while it has de facto already taken a leadership role in shaping the EU’s response to Russian aggression in the EU’s neighborhood. GMF’s Europe Program provides analysis of German foreign, security and European policy and offers dialogue formats for European and transatlantic policy-makers on this issue.
