Digital Innovation and Democracy Initiative

Western societies face tensions around globalization and immigration just as new technologies are poised to create further disruption. Technology is needed to solve many of our most pressing societal challenges and further advance individual freedom. But without guardrails, new technology can also be abused to undermine democratic values. In the online environment, disinformation, cyber threats, censorship, and surveillance have been deployed, weaponizing ethnic, gender, and racial tensions. Meanwhile, winner-takes-all economics are driving risk and economic vulnerability onto individuals and their families. As we draw benefit from new technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, 5G, the Internet of Things, and bioengineering, it is critical that we also safeguard against their misuse. GMF Digital will leverage GMF’s extensive networks to develop strategies that advance innovation and strengthen democratic values.
